Longley Way Lions

2016-17 School Year

Greetings and welcome to the 2016-17 school year at Longley Way!  We have a dynamic and exciting school year ahead, made possible by our extraordinary staff, awesome parents, and the best students in California.  We are proud of our school and the supportive, inclusive, and warm community we have on our campus.  Longley Way is the place to be!

This year is full of many new endeavors for our school and district.  We are on our first year of AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) in our upper grades and are focusing on what it means to be a leader across all grade levels, specifically as it relates to The Leader In Me and The 7 Habits of Happy Kids.  Curricularly there is no better time to be in education as we move toward Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), build upon new and recently implemented math and language arts standards, and push ourselves and our students to be innovative and creative thinkers.

Another major component this year is our focus on what it means to have a growth mindset at school.  Students with growth mindsets understand that their abilities and success in school can be developed through their dedication and effort; not solely their intellectual abilities.  Having a growth mindset allows all to move beyond their fears of failure and instead provides the realization that school achievement is possible for all. From this mentality stems a love of learning and resiliency, which are essential for our 21st Century children.

Finally, Longley Way highly values developing exemplary citizenship and self-worth in all our students.  We view this as a shared opportunity of our school, families, and community members to help our students become caring and well-rounded individuals. Teachers and staff put significant emphasis on our Longley Way “Teach-To’s,” which are the procedures and rules for all the common areas of our school. In addition, we have monthly integrity themes such as Responsibility, Respect, Kindness, Honesty, Trustworthiness, and Fairness, which this year will be incorporated with the 7 Habits.

Here is to a great year!
