Welcome to Longley Way Elementary School! We are happy to include you in our Longley Way Community, and encourage your participation in school events and activities. Education truly is a partnership between school, home and community. Please accept our invitation to be an active participant.
 
 
This handbook is designed to develop a better understanding of our school procedures and expectations. It provides pertinent information regarding our school and our Parent Teacher Association. Please take time to read and discuss the information in this handbook with your child.

Longley Way Vision & Mission Statement
 Our mission is to ensure that all students are provided engaging, meaningful schoolwork that results in challenging them to think and reason, develop ownership for their own lifelong learning, respect diversity, and be contributing members of society.
 
 
ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS
CLASS WORK
We feel that student work in the classroom offers the best chance for educational achievement to the individual student.  Therefore, the minimum requirements for students at Longley Way Elementary will be:
1. Regular attendance
2. In class and ready to go to work on time.
3. All materials assembled - paper, pencil, books, etc.
4. Follow class rules.
5. Make-up all missed work
If a student is absent from school due to illness, his/her parent may request classroom assignments.  This request should be made at the office.
HOMEWORK
Homework is required of all Arcadia elementary students. Regular assignments are made for which classroom time is not provided. Homework is an extension of work initiated in class, which gives children additional practice in the use of learned skills. Some children may have work to do at home because they were unable (or unwilling) to complete the assignments during the school day. Please consult your child’s teacher if you have questions concerning homework or the completion of class work.

It is important that children are provided the proper environment in which to complete their homework. Parents are encouraged to help children, if needed, to complete assignments. Parental cooperation in checking student work before it is returned to the teacher is beneficial and appreciated.
 
 
For your child to be successful with homework, he/she needs:     
A place to do homework.  If possible, your child should do his/her homework in the same place (an uncluttered, quiet space to study).
A schedule for completing homework. Set a homework schedule that fits in with each week’s particular activities.
Encouragement, motivation, and prompting.  It is not a good idea to sit with your child and do homework with him/her. Your child needs to practice independently and to apply what he/she has learned in class.  If your child consistently cannot complete homework assignments alone, please contact the teacher.
Understanding of the knowledge. When your child is practicing a skill, ask which steps he/she finds difficult and easy and how he/she plans to improve speed and accuracy with the skill. If your child is working on a project, ask what knowledge he/she is using to complete the work. If your child consistently cannot answer these questions, please contact the teacher.
Reasonable time expectations.  If your child seems to be spending too much time each night on homework, please contact the teacher.
At bedtime. When it is time to go to bed, please stop your child, even if he/she has not finished the homework. 
MAKE-UP SCHOOL WORK
 
Make up schoolwork may be requested from your child’s teacher. Please request it by phone call to the office early in the morning and plan to pick it up after school in the office, as the teacher will need time to prepare it. Getting well takes precedence over completing schoolwork. Children will be given the same number of days as ill to make up schoolwork.
 
If your child will be absent from school due to a trip or extended illness (five days or more), please contact your child’s teacher to set up an Independent Study program. To set up the Independent Study program, please contact the office a minimum of 5 days prior to your trip, so that the contract may be signed and school work prepared.  An extended illness may qualify your child for a home teacher. Please contact the school office if it appears your child’s absence will be of long duration.
 
STUDENT ASSESSMENT
TESTING
Testing is an integral part of any instructional program.  It is an on going process and correlated with the curriculum. School District assessments will be administered to all Arcadia Unified School District students (K-5) throughout the year.  In addition, students will be assessed in a variety of ways throughout the year by their teachers to provide information about student progress.

SBAC- Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium
Students in grades 3-5 take the Smarter Balanced assessment test in the spring.  This nationwide test, which is taken on computer, replaces the previous CST that students in grade 2-5 took annually. The SBAC is meant to assess students' mastery of the Common Core State Standards for their particular grade level.
REPORT CARDS
 
Report cards are given at the end of each trimester.
CONFERENCES 
Student-led conferences are scheduled near the end of the first trimester. Students are expected to set goals, share examples of their work with parents, and self-assess their progress. 
 
Spring parent-teacher conferences will be optional in the 2014-15 school year. Teachers will be meeting with parents and their children that need further instruction or counsel about school achievement. All parents may request a conference with the teacher at the Spring Conferences if they desire. Teachers or parents can always schedule parent-teacher conferences as the need arises. Please call or email the teacher to arrange a conference appointment or send a note to school with your child.
 
STUDENT ACADEMIC RECOGNITION 
School achievement and scholarship are highly valued at Longley Way Elementary. In 2014-2015 students will be recognized for their academic effort and achievement as well as their participation in the Accelerated Reader program at the end of each trimester at the Integrity assembly. In June, a special Scholarship Assembly will be presented to acknowledge all of our fifth grade students who have achieved great academic accomplishments during the school year. At the end of the year, the top fifth grade scholars are honored by having their names added to progressive scholarship plaques.
 
Accelerated Reader
Motivational programs are offered to children to encourage reading and math improvement. The Accelerated Reader Program offers children the opportunity to earn points by reading approved books at their level and then be tested on their comprehension on the computer. Earned points can be used at the monthly Accelerated Reader Store to purchase prizes.
 
EXTENDED SCHOOL OPPORTUNITIES
 Students identified by teachers based on classroom work and/or various assessments, may be invited to participate in the Title 1 Tutoring Programor other intervention programs. Parents will be notified.

PERSONAL MESSAGES
 
EMERGENCYmessages will be relayed to students by the office staff. The office will notify the classroom via e-mail and the child will be sent to the office at a convenient time. Please use this service sparingly in order to keep classroom and office interruptions to a minimum.
 
 
ARRIVAL and PICK UP
 
Children MAY NOT ARRIVE AT SCHOOL BEFORE 7:45 AM, when supervision is provided in the MPR. Children must be picked up promptly (within 30 minutes) at the end of the school day unless they are enrolled in the Shining Stars Day Care Program (821-6348) or Arcadia Recreation Program (574-5113).
 
Children in grades 3-5 may ride bicycles to school (in accordance with the age recommendation of the Arcadia Police and the California Highway Patrol). Bike riders must walk their bikes onto the school grounds. Bike racks are provided in a fenced area next to the Library/Media Center. All bicycles must be locked. The school assumes no responsibility for lost or stolen bicycles. Wear approved helmets. Skateboards, skates, scooters or shoes with wheels may not be brought to school.
 
 
 
TRAFFIC
 
The number of children being driven to school has increased dramatically over the last few years. This has created a great deal of congestion in the peak times before and after school. Please do not park in staff-designated parking spaces; not even to drop off or pick up your child and abide by the following:
 
¨       Circle the school in a clock-wise direction. This permits children to be dropped off on the school side of the street and avoids jaywalking and children passing through moving or parked cars.
¨       Two “drive through” areas are available for loading and unloading: on Warren Way and Longley Way.
¨       Please have your children “ready to launch”…sitting on the passenger side of the car, backpacks on laps or near by!
¨       Safety Patrol students will be available to open the door for your child, give a greeting, help with a backpack and then close the door. Parents should not need to get out of their cars.
¨       Do not park in the drive through areas.
¨       No U-turns please! Signs are posted; violators will be ticketed.
¨       Please drive carefully!
 
 
CROSSING GUARDS
 
Crossing Guards are stationed on the following corners before and after school:
¨       Warren Way and Live Oak Ave.
¨       Woodruff Ave. and Longley Way
 
ATTENDANCE / ABSENCES
All children are expected to be in attendance each day unless they are ill or a family emergency arises.  
Please pay close attention to your child’s future by seeing that he/she is in school and on time each day.  Attendance problems hinder progress.  Even if you get the missed assignments for your child to do at home, it is not the same as your child being in class and participating.  Teachers are not obligated to provide make-up work for unexcused absences.  However, students are allowed to make up work missed because of a justified absence.
Please call the school office to report your child’s absence.The office is required by the State to keep attendance records.  A message at night or a call first thing in the morning to the school office at 626-821-8357 X 5752 or an e-mail to LWAttendance@ausd.net would be appreciated and would eliminate the need for a call from the Office. Please call everyday your child is absent.

RETURNING TO SCHOOL AFTER AN ILLNESS
 
A student’s temperature must be normal for 24 hours without any medication before returning to school. If your student has diarrhea he or she must remain at home until the diarrhea has resolved. After five consecutive days of absence due to illness, students are required to obtain a note from their doctor stating that they are cleared to return to school. Please bring this note to the office before your child goes to class.
 
TARDIES
 
Students who are tardy must report to the office before going to class. If you know in advance that a student is going to be late, please call the office. Excessive tardies will be referred to the AUSD /School Attendance and Review Board.

 

Tardy Policy 
  1. 6 tardies within one reporting period (Letter sent home and student to meet with counselor)

  2. 8 tardies within one reporting period (Parent meeting with principal and counselor)

  3. 10 tardies within one reporting period (SART meeting and essay for student at recess if applicable)

 

*If a student continues to be tardy after the SART meeting, then a meeting will be held with principal, police officer school liaison, and counselor.

 
 
AUSD /School Attendance and Review Board
Students who miss more than 5 days of school, either consecutively or cumulative, are considered truant. Students who are late to school in excess of 30 minutes are considered truant on each occurrence. Students with 5 or more unexcused absences or excessive absences and tardies will be required to attend a SARB conference with their parents
 
 
SCHOOL UNIFORM STANDARDS
 
Uniform Standards will be strictly enforced. Students not abiding by the School Uniform Standards will receive unsatisfactory conduct warning/notices. All students should come to school in clothing that is neat, clean and safe.
 
Pants/Shorts/Skirts and Jumpers
¨       Solid Color: Navy blue or khaki (tan)
¨       Style: Fitted at the waist (no baggy styles or short shorts); no overalls
¨       Fabric: Twill, cotton, corduroy; or jeans (blue, without decoration), without rips or tears.
¨       Length of Shorts/Skirts/Jumpers: At minimum, shorts must have 6” inseam. Skirts/Jumpers must be at least finger tip length when arms are held down by the student’s sides.
 
 
Shirts/Blouses (Boys and Girls)
¨       Solid Color: White, light blue, navy blue (5th graders only may wear red).
¨       Style: Polo, oxford or turtleneck; shirts must have collars and sleeves (LW logo or not, but no other logos)
¨       Longley Way Lion T-shirts may also be worn.
Shoes
¨       Athletic or regular shoes (closed heel and toe). No crocks are allowed. Socks must be worn.
 
 
Miscellaneous Notes
¨       EVERY FRIDAY IS FREE DRESS DAY. Reasonable clothing must still be worn including socks and shoes. (No baggy pants, sandals or crocs.)No spaghetti straps on tops, no halter tops or short shorts are allowed, no sleeveless t-shirts.
¨       School Spirit Day is the first Friday of the month. Children are encouraged to wear clothing with the school logo, the Longley Way Lion t-shirt or Integrity buttons given at assemblies.
¨       Scout uniforms may be worn on meeting days.
¨       Plain, brimmed hats may be worn for sun protection, outside only.
¨       Please put your child’s name on jackets and sweaters in case they are lost. Clothes left at the end of the school year will be donated to charity.
¨       Assistance is available to anyone unable to purchase uniforms. Please contact the school office for confidential information.
 
 
LUNCH INFORMATION
 
School lunch menus are sent home monthly. These menus should be used to plan whether or not children will buy or bring a lunch from home. Currently, a school lunch may be purchased for $3.75. Children who bring a lunch to school may purchase milk for 50 cents.  
 
We currently have a POS (Point of Sale) program for children to purchase lunches at school. Parents can deposit funds in the child’s account and it will be debited as the child uses it. Please put checks in an envelope with the child’s name, room number, student number, check amount and check number, and/or the amount of cash on the front, and turn it in to the office. 
 
Families experiencing financial hardship may apply for free or reduced lunches. Applications are available in the office.
 
ARCADIA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT HEALTHY LUNCH AND FOOD POLICY
 
 
In an effort to create safer schools for all children, to help students develop an increased awareness of their own responsibility in making healthy nutritional choices, and to meet state and Federal mandates to school districts regarding nutrition, the PTA and the Arcadia Unified School District has adopted the following guidelines for grades kindergarten through eight.
 
Rationale: Many students must follow diets that are restricted because of food allergies, religious beliefs, or other reasons. In order to protect student health, sharing food is therefore not permitted. The district provides a variety of healthy lunch selections each day. The lunch selections served at school must meet specific nutritional guidelines. The guidelines assure your children are being provided with a healthy and nutritious meal. 
 
Guidelines: For these reasons AUSD PTA and administration have committed to work together to promote healthier food choices at school. Whether a child purchases a meal at school or brings one from home, the PTSA and AUSD wish to promote a safe and healthy lifestyle.
 
In support of the desire to promote safe schools and healthy children, the following Healthy School Guidelines are adopted:
 
  • Students should develop an increased awareness of their own responsibility in making healthy nutritional choices
  • Students may purchase their lunch at school through the school’s cafeteria or bring a lunch from home with them in the morning. 
  • Student lunches should promote healthy choices. Candy and soft-drinks do not meet the food guidelines set by the state for The Healthy Meals Act, and should not be included in lunches brought from home.
 
 
Due to SAFETY concerns:
  • Parents are not to bring a lunch to their children during the school day.
  • Students may not have lunch delivered to school by outside vendors.
  • Students may not share any food items with other students.
  • Students may not provide food to other students.
 
No child will be allowed to go hungry. If a child forgets their lunch, they shall be provided with a lunch by the school and be given the opportunity to pay for it at a later time.
 
REMINDER: Birthday celebrations are not allowed at school. Cakes, cupcakes, and other foods will not be accepted at school for a child’s birthday.
 
TELEPHONE USE BY STUDENTS                       
The school phone is for business purposes.  Permission will be given to a child to use the telephone when the teacher, principal or office staff feels it is necessary and appropriate.   
CELL PHONES: Students may bring a cell phone to school as long as it is turned off and kept in their backpack. Permission to use the cell phone must be given by a teacher or school authority.
If students are using their cell phones during the school day without permission, the cell phone will be confiscated and sent to the Principal's office. Parents may come in to the office in person to claim the cell phone, or send a note directing the Principal to send the phone home with the student.
 
 
HEALTH SERVICES
First Aid is provided during the school day for injuries and illnesses. Please instruct your child to tell a teacher about any injury that occurs on the playground or in the classroom. Parents are notified of serious injuries (severe sprains, fractured bones, and head injuries). Lesser injuries are given first aid (cleaned and bandaged as appropriate) and the child is returned to the classroom.
 
Children who are not well in the morning should stay home. If your child is ill during the school day we will call you and ask you to come to pick up your child. Any child with a temperature of 100 or higher, has vomited within the last 24 hours, or does not feel well enough to participate in ALL school activities should stay home. Any student with diarrhea must remain at home until the diarrhea has resolved. Disease spreads very quickly in a classroom. Sick children should not be at school. If your child has been exposed to one of the highly contagious reportable diseases (strep throat, chicken pox, scarlet fever, measles, mumps, etc.) please call the office so that we may confidentially inform the parents of classmates.
 
Medications—any medication taken by a child during the school day must be kept in the health office and administered only by authorized office personnel. Medication must be brought to the office with a signed Physician’s Recommendation for Medication form (available in the office), which states the name of the medication, the amount to be given, and the time the medication is to be administered. The medication remains in the office and the child must come to the office at the designated time(s). This includes all prescription drugs, asthma medication, inhalers, and aspirin, Tylenol, cough syrups, etc. All medication must be picked up at the end of the school year. Please do not send any medications to school with your child, to take on his/her own, including over the counter medications. These must all be kept in the office for the safety of all children.
 
Children who are sent home from the school health office. If your student was sent home from the health office with a temperature of 100 degrees or greater or they vomited while at school it is mandatory that the child remain at home the following day. This is the policy of the Arcadia Unified School District and is for the protection, safety and welfare of your child as well as other children and staff. 
 
ILLNESS & ACCIDENTS
If your child becomes seriously ill or is injured at school, we will make him/her comfortable and then call you immediately.  If we cannot reach you, we will use the emergency contact information you have provided.  In case of serious accident, we will call “911".  Please remember, we cannot keep ill children at school.   If your student requires a PE excuse, a written note from a parent is accepted for 1 (one) day. Anything longer requires a note from their Physician.
 
MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS
Children will be released from school for medical, optical, or dental appointments. Please send a note to the teacher so your child will be sent to the office at the appropriate time. Parents picking up children must sign the Student Release log in the office. All releases are done from the office, not the classroom.
 
REQUIRED IMMUNIZATIONS
Polio (OPV and/or IPV): 4 doses at any age
Four doses at any age, but three doses meet requirement if at least one was given on or after the 4th birthday.
 
Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis:
Age 6 years and under (Pertussis is required)
DTP, DTaP or any combination of DTP or DTaP with DT (tetanus and diphtheria).
at least 4 doses: If last dose was given before the 4th birthday, one more dose is required.
Age 7 years and older (Pertussis is not required)
Td, DT, or DTP, DTaP or any combination of these
at least 3 doses: If last dose was given before the 2nd birthday, one more (Td) dose is required.
 
Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR): 2 doses
1st Dose   -       Must be given on or after first birthday
2nd Dose -       Must be given before entering Kindergarten
 
Hepatitis B: 3 doses*
1st Dose   -       Birth or older
2nd Dose -       One month after first dose
3rd Dose   -       Four months after second dose or six months after first dose
*Intervals may vary per doctor, clinic or health provider.
 
Varicella (Chicken Pox)
All students entering kindergarten will need to present documentation of varicella (chicken pox) immunization or documentation from a medical doctor that the student has had the disease.
 
Note: If the physical condition of the student is such that immunization is not safe, a written statement by a licensed physician must be filed with the school. If immunizations are contrary to the parent’s or guardian’s beliefs, a signed statement to that effect must be filed with the school.

HEALTH SCREENINGS
Yearly screenings of height and weight for 5th graders are recorded in students’ health folders. Hearing tests are given to kindergarten, 2nd, and 5th grade students. Vision screenings are conducted for kindergarten, 3rd grade, and all new students. 
 
EMERGENCY CARDS
California State law requires listing 3 individuals other than parents who are willing & authorized to pick up the student. It is critical that your child’s Emergency Card be filled out completely and that the school office is notified of any change in your address or telephone numbers. Please notify the school immediately if there is a change in your address, telephone number, care provider, or person to contact in an emergency.  Also, please be sure to keep your work phone number(s) and cell phone numbers updated!  This information is very important in case your child becomes ill or injured.
Friends or relatives listed as alternates to be notified in an emergency must be aware of this responsibility and be willing to intervene should we be unable to reach you. Under no circumstances will a sick child be released without proper supervision. If both parents are away, (a business trip or vacation) the school needs to know who is responsible for your child in your absence. Please submit an AUTHORIZATION FOR ADULT TO ACT AS CUSTODIAL PARENT form should this occur. The form is available in the school office.
 
FIRE DRILLS & EMERGENCY EVACUATIONS
Fire drills and emergency evacuations are necessary for the safety of the students and staff.  Everyone should know the specific directions for reaching a point of safety from the area of the school building in which he/she may be.  Practice drills will occur throughout the school year.  Specific information is posted in each classroom.
 
WITHDRAWAL OF STUDENTS
If you are moving and are withdrawing your child from school, please call or come into the school office a five days prior to the withdrawal date.  This will give ample time to complete the necessary paperwork, etc.  Your cooperation is always greatly appreciated.
 
 
CLASSROOM VISITS
Whenever a parent wishes to visit his/her child’s classroom for purposes of observation, it is required that you make an appointment with the teacher and principal in advance of the day of your intended visit.  Upon arrival at school, go to the school office to obtain and sign the Visitors’ Log.  Classroom visits are limited to 30 minutes a day and only one day per week.  This requirement is mandatory for all classes at Longley Way Elementary from grades K-5 general education and special education classes.
                                                         
DROP OFFS AT SCHOOL
 In part because we are teaching your children responsibility and the natural consequences of both planning and preparation, the school will not accept drop offs in the office of any item that your student forgot to bring to school with them, including but not limited to: jackets, backpacks, lunches, water bottles, instruments, homework, library books, any student work and projects.
 
ACCESS TO CLASSROOMS AFTER SCHOOL
Students are expected to take all necessary items with them as they leave the classroom at the end of the day. The custodians have been instructed not to open classrooms for students. Access to Social Studies, Math, and Science textbooks are available online at our school website: http://lw.ausd.net/ 
 
LOST AND FOUND
Sweaters, jackets, lunch boxes, etc., should be labeled with your child’s name. All found clothing and lunch boxes are placed in boxes inside the Multipurpose Room. Small items (keys, jewelry, wallets, money, glasses, etc.) are held in the lost and found drawer in the office.
 
TOYS, NON-SCHOOL RELATED PERSONAL POSSESSIONS AND MONEY
 Please have students leave toys, non-school personal related possessions and money at home. If items in these categories are brought to school the teacher upon seeing the item being played with or used in the classroom or playground, will confiscate the item and return it to the student at the end of the school day to take home. If the same item or other items in similar categories are brought to school again by the student, the teacher will confiscate the item(s) and turn the item(s) into the Principal. The Principal will contact the parent so they may retrieve the item(s) for their child. Longley Way School and AUSD does not assume responsibility to lost or damaged items that students bring to school without permission.
 
DOGS ON CAMPUS
 
Please leave your dog at home when you are dropping off or picking up your student. Animals are not allowed on campus for safety and sanitation reasons.
 
CARE OF TEXTBOOKS, LIBRARY BOOKS, ETC.
Students are responsible for all textbooks and library books issued to them during the school year.  All lost or damaged books must be paid for.  All monies collected are recorded by the school office and paid to the proper fund for replacement purposes.  If a lost book is found, money paid will be refunded.
PARENT-TEACHER ASSOCIATION (PTA)
Parents and students are encouraged to join the PTA (Parent Teacher Association). Longley Way’s PTA activities strongly support the school. The PTA provides support of our educational program as well as providing programs that are enjoyable for students to partake in. Children bring home envelope forms for membership at the beginning of the school year during the annual PTA membership drive. You will meet the PTA officers and find out how you can help our school.
 
ROOM MOTHERS/ROOM FATHERS
 Room parents play an important role at our school. They act as hosts/hostesses for class activities/parties. Please contact the PTA if you would be willing to serve in this capacity. 
 
CLASSROOM VOLUNTEERS & CHAPERONES
 Classroom volunteers are critical to maintaining the high quality education that Longley Way children deserve. Some parents are able to donate time during the school day, helping teachers prepare materials for class projects and lessons. Others work directly with small groups or individual students. Parents who work during the day donate services at special times, such as carnivals, book fairs, fund-raisers, etc. All volunteers who work directly with children must have a TB clearance which includes all parents & guardians who chaperone field trips. The TB clearance is valid for 4 years from the date of the test. Training is available for parents to work as part of the Success Team assisting students with reading and math activities in the classroom. 
 
For student safety and school security, Volunteers and Visitors must sign the Volunteer/Visitors Log in the office and obtain a volunteer/visitor badge. All volunteers must sign out at the office when leaving campus. State Education code states that school administration must know who is on campus in case of an emergency. Volunteers that have permanent volunteer/visitor badges must pick-up their badges at the office upon their arrival, and relinquish them at their departure. All visitors or volunteers without badges on campus will be directed to the office to sign in and obtain a badge.
 
                                                                    
ROOM LISTS/ROOM PARTIES
 
District policy limits classroom parties to two per year. Room Parents maintain a list of all the children in a classroom. Each child is listed by name, address and phone number (with parent permission). These lists are never used for commercial purposes.  
 
LONGLEY WAY LIBRARY AND MEDIA CENTER
The Longley Way Library has a good selection of books and resource materials for all elementary students. Classroom teachers schedule weekly visits to the Library/Media Center, where children have the opportunity to browse, checkout books, do research, and use the latest computer technology. The library utilizes the services of a part-time library/computer aide. Volunteers, “Friends of the Library” are always needed! Time will set aside each morning for volunteers to assist the Library Instructional Assistant with re-shelving, organizing, and assisting in the library. Please contact the school office if you would like to be a “Friend of the Library” volunteer.

The Arcadia School District places a high priority on integrating technology into the curriculum. The Arcadia Educational Foundation, through fund-raisers, including SCRIP sales, has helped the District provide computers with Internet access for each classroom.  Students are trained in the appropriate use of computers and sign Technology Student Use Contracts. Many teachers have developed classroom websites to inform families of pertinent information and/or show classroom work.
 
LEADERSHIP
Fourth and fifth grade students are eligible to run for Student Council offices. Students serve in leadership capacities for half the school year. In addition, classes elect council representatives who meet periodically to plan school wide activities. Student Council leaders are recognized at an assembly twice yearly.
SPORTSMANSHIP
Longley Way encourages participation of upper grade children in the noon sports program. Sportsmanship assemblies are held twice each year where certificates are presented to each team, and sportsmanship is recognized. At these assemblies one boy and one girl are selected by student ballot for special sportsmanship recognition. This includes having their names engraved on the Sportsmanship Plaque.

It is necessary that children learn to develop self-discipline in order to further their academic achievement and success in life.  We ask that you discuss with your child the importance and need for good behavior and a good attitude while at school.  We will not tolerate fighting, disrespect towards others, obscene language, unsafe, harmful actions or destruction of school property.

INTEGRITY PROGRAM/SECOND STEP SOCIAL SKILLS
 
During the school year,Longley Way Elementary school will continue the Second Step curriculum as a means to develop students’ critical thinking, emotional intelligence and corresponding social skills. Every Second Step lesson is built around a story depicting an every day situation that students might encounter in their lives. Class discussion of the stories is followed by teacher modeling of pro-social behavior and student skill practice. Students learn empathy skills, such as caring and helping behaviors; communication skills, such as active listening; social problem-solving skills; and skills for managing and communicating emotions. Students learn to think rationally to handle everyday conflicts and problems, develop a respect for others’ perspectives and ideas in the process. The problem-solving model teaches students to evaluate solutions based on safety fairness, others’ feelings and workability. All of these skills combined help students understand, value and act on core ethical values.
 
At the end of each month children in each classroom will be chosen as strong representatives of the character values taught during the Second Step lessons. Staff members will be observing for a “transfer of learning”…that is, using positive social skills that they have been learning in their classrooms. These students will be recognized at a school assembly.  Monthly themes include behaviors that are woven throughout the Second Step curriculum:

REWARDING POSITIVE BEHAVIOR
Every effort will be made to reward positive behavior on the part of students.  At the classroom level, teachers use many systems and techniques to reinforce positive behaviors on the part of the students.  Outside the classroom, staff members give verbal praise for good behavior when earned.  In addition, students who have demonstrated good behavior choices and excellent work skills be invited to participate in Principal’s Recess once a month. Music, Frisbees, jump roping and games with the Principal…all in celebration of the great students of Longley Way!
DISCIPLINE POLICY (BP 5144)
The Governing Board believes that one of the major functions of the public schools is to support parents in the preparation of youth for responsible citizenship. To this end, the district will foster a learning environment which reinforces the concepts of self-discipline, proper behavior, good manners and the acceptance of personal responsibility. Students are expected to progress from being adult-directed to self-directed with minimal application of disciplinary measures.
The district's disciplinary policies and regulations are promulgated in order to maintain a learning environment supporting the highest quality educational program. These policies and regulations relate to student conduct by delineating acceptable behavior and providing the basis for sound, consistent disciplinary practices within each school in the district. These policies and regulations will be enforced fairly and consistently without regard to race, creed, color or sex.
The administration, teachers and classified staff share the mutual responsibility for student conduct and safety and the enforcement of district policies and regulations. The Board shall give all reasonable support and assistance to all employees with respect to the student discipline. Parents are expected to take responsibility for their child's actions and to actively cooperate with district personnel to promote increasing levels of personal responsibility on the part of their child.
All AUSD students K-12 are subject to California State Education Code 48900 regarding Suspension and Expulsion.  The AUSD Student Behavior Matrix will be used as a guideline for appropriate consequences.
 
STUDENT HALL PASSES
During the school day, students may not be outside their regularly assigned classroom at any time without a student pass.  Passes may be obtained from a teacher or other school staff member.  You may not leave the playground to come to the office without a pass from the Proctor.

6.   **Parents accompanying students to school will sit or stand with their child/children in the MPR and insure that their child is following the guidelines or parents may wait with their children at the outside lunch pavilion.
7.  Students and Parents may not wait in the hallway by the classroom door prior to the first bell. Teachers are often involved in pre-school and after school meetings, as well as preparing materials for the day. Before school and after school is considered teacher planning time. If you wish to conference with your child’s teacher please call and make an appointment for a conference, or email the teacher and she/he will email you at their free time.
8.  When the bell rings students will walk quietly to their classroom door, in a line and wait quietly for their teacher. (Parents may accompany children to the classroom door.)

  8. During computer lab time, students will stay seated, sit appropriately in their chairs, focus on their assignments, and follow teacher and librarian instructions.

  9. Students will log off the computers at the end of the period or shut them down properly.  

  10. Students will push in their chairs before leaving the library/computer lab.  

  11. Students will make sure to take all personal items (i.e. pencils, books, jackets, papers, etc.) with them upon leaving the library/computer lab.

  12. Students will walk at all times.  

  13. Students will be responsible to return their library books on time each week.


 

Positive, Negative and Almost-but not Quite examples:

Positive: Walking at all times, using a soft voice, using browsing sticks correctly, standing quietly in line to check out books, treating books with respect, pushing in chairs, staying seated during computer lab time, listening carefully to instructions, respecting books, returning books each week on time.
Negative: Running, skipping, jumping, talking loudly or yelling, hitting others with browsing sticks, fooling around in line, dropping/throwing sticks and swords, leaning back in chairs, removing books from the library without checking them out.

Official Playground Safety Rules
for Equipment And Games
 
 
1.  Students may not play in areas out of sight of the Playground Supervisors/Proctors. They may never play behind or between the portables, or inside the bathroom or in the hallways of the building.
 
2. The lunch area should never be used for play.
 
3.       MONKEY BARS
 
·         Students take turns swinging underneath in one direction.
·         Students may not go on top of the bars or sit on top of the bars.
·         If there is more than one child crossing on bars, a line must be formed.
·         No pulling or pushing on the legs, arms, etc. of any child on the bars.
·         No jumping on the bars.
  
 
4.       BIG TOY AREA
  • No chase, tag or running is permitted in the Big Toy Area.
  • Students should not throw sand or wood chips
  • Students should slide DOWN the slide. No one should go up the slide.
  • No pushing or shoving is permitted
  • Students cannot block or hold up students from using the equipment or sliding down poles or the slide.
 
5.       SLIDE
  • One person can go down the slide at a time.
  • Slide down, sitting, with feet in front.
  • Climbing up the slide is not allowed.
  • Do not block or prevent others from sliding down the slide.
 
6        SWINGS
  • One person on a swing at a time.
  • Must swing in the same direction.
  • No jumping out of swing.
  • No going from side to side or twisting in a swing.
  • No pushing someone in the swing
  • No holding hands while swinging.
  • When there are children waiting, they must stand in front of the person on the swing and far enough away to avoid being kicked by the swinger.
  • Grabbing feet, etc. is forbidden.
  • No climbing on poles of swings or standing between swingers.
  • The first person in the line counts to 30 (one count per swing) for the person swinging. After 30 counts, the person swinging must get off and it will be the next student’s turn.
 
7.      JUMP ROPE
  • Long jump ropes are to be used with groups of 3 or more.
  • Short jump ropes are for individual use.
  • Jump ropes may only be used on the black top area of the playground.
  • Jump ropes should never be tied or twisted around any part of a student’s body.
  • No “hot peppers” unless the jumper requests it.
 
 
8.      KICK BALL
  • No closed games
  • All players on the team that is up must line up in their kicking order behind the home plate.
  • Only one kicker at a time.
  • The ball must be rolled to the kicker, not bounced.
  • The runner is out if tagged by the ball or if the ball is thrown to the base to which the runner is headed before the runner is there.
  • The ball cannot be thrown at the runner.
  • The runner cannot leave the base (take lead offs) until the ball is pitched.
  • No sliding into the bases.
 
 
19.    SOCCER
  • No closed games
  • No tackling or slide tackling is allowed.
  • No body slams or pushing is allowed.
  • Touching the ball with the hands or forearm (except by the goalie) results in the other team taking the ball out to the sideline.
 
EMERGENCY SIGNAL
In the event of an emergency, it might become necessary for all students to stop play. The signal for students to stop all play is the sound of 3 LOUD blow of the whistle and the adult blowing their whistle will raise both arms. At the sound of 3 LOUD whistles, everyone must stop all activity immediately and freeze where they are. Students must then look for the adult with their hands raised and listen for special directions.

OFFICIAL HANDBALL RULES
Handball may only be played against the ball walls, never against the building walls.
 
RULES OF THE GAME:
  1. Two people play against each other.
  1. All new players must come from the front of the line.
  1. If a player waiting in line chooses not to enter the game he/she must go to then end of the line.
  1. The first person in line will act as a judge on questionable calls.
  1. All people in line will remain behind the “in bounds” lines.
  1. The server serves the ball by bouncing it against the ground and then the          backboard. The served ball must land in play.
  1. The opposing player then hits the returning ball, bouncing it on the ground then the backboard. This continues until a foul is committed.
  1. The player committing the foul leaves the game. The first player in the waiting lines comes into the game and the player who just won must serve.
When any of the following occurs, the player has committed a foul and is “out”:
 
Fouls
1. The ball hits the backboard before hitting the ground.

      2. The ball bounces more than once before or after it has hit the backboard.

      3. The ball is hit with other than the hands and arms.

      4. A player interferes with another player trying to return the ball.

      5. A player hits the ball and, after hitting the backboard, the ball goes out of the   
          court bounds before it hits the ground.

      6. A player catches or holds the ball (other than prior to the serve).
 
      7. Clarification: All balls that hit the line are fair and in play!
 
No other rules may be added or used during hand ball games at Longley Way. Players that do not comply with these rules will be restricted from playing hand ball for two weeks.
 
 
 
 
LONGLEY WAY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
 OFFICIAL FOUR SQUARE RULES
  1. Players take positions in boxes “1, 2, 3, and 4”. The object of the game is to be in the server box “1” and stay there.
  1. Player “1” starts the game and children hit the ball from box to box in any order until someone misses. When someone misses they go to the end of the wait line and the first person in line enters into box ”4. All the other people in front of box “4” move up toward “1”.
  1. Bounce the ball for the serve behind the service line and in the service square. Say “service” so everyone knows you are serving the ball. You do not have to tell to whom or where you are going to serve.
  1. The ball must bounce before you hit it.
  1. The heal of the hand or the fist may never be used to strike the ball. No throwing, pushing, spinning or carrying the ball. You must slap it, using your palms with one or both hands.
  1. The first person in the wait line serves as judge for all questionable calls.
 
Fouls that put a player out:
  1. Failure to hit a ball which bounces into one’s box.
  1. Playing a ball which has bounced into someone else’s box.
  1. Hitting the ball out of bounds or on to a line.
  1. Hitting the ball into one’s own box.
  1. Stepping out of your square or stepping on the lines.
No other rules may be added or used during four square games at Longley Way. Players that do not comply with these rules will be restricted from playing four square for two weeks

 OFFICIAL BASKETBALL RULES
 
Basketball is a game between two teams. Each team has a basket. The object is to get the basketball into the basket. Doing so earns the team 2 points each time
 
The ball can only be moved by the player dribbling (bouncing the ball) as they move or by passing (tossing the ball) to another player.
 
Players cannot make contact by hitting, pushing or intentionally bumping into other players.
 
Basketball can be either a full court game or a half court game depending
upon how many people want to play and how many courts are available.
No more than 10 players may participate in a full court basketball game.  No more than 6 players may play in the half court game.
No pushing, intentional bumping, or rough play is permitted.
 
Any fouls or disputed play should be resolved by a jump ball.
 
Anytime a player who is in the act of shooting is touched; a foul has been committed. 
Any player who commits flagrant or excessive fouls will be asked to leave the court for the remainder of the recess or lunch period.
Only a basketball will be used for the game of basketball.
 
 
No other rules may be added or used during basketball games at Longley Way. Players that do not comply with these rules will be restricted from playing basketball for two weeks.
